Their natural toughness stands up to the wear and tear of everyday life, making them ideal for high traffic areas like hallways and corridors. Because of their naturally soft texture, jute rugs are durable and comfortable, adding a premium feel to your living areas.

The history of jute carpets and rugs

Jute rugs have been popular for centuries, dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation of the Bronze Age.

Jute is a natural plant fibre grown in Southeast Asia that still ranks as one of the world's most affordable and versatile eco-friendly fibres. It is so versatile that it’s believed the Ancient Egyptians even ate jute plants.

Jute trading began with the British in the 17th century and was highly profitable for many manufacturers then. They were used throughout World Wars, with over one billion jute crafted sandbags exported to the trenches in World War I.

Jute has been used to create ropes, twine, and burlap throughout history for its durability. This gives it a rugged, timeless look that has contributed to its popularity in modern decor, with the return of rustic aesthetics and neutral tones in home styling. Despite its rugged appearance, jute is known for its softness, making it the perfect fit for your family home.

Styling: How to style this timeless, favourite rug style

Jute rugs are versatile thanks to their natural appearance and range of dyed colours. Jute floor coverings are popular for anyone cultivating a boho or beachy themed home, as the natural fibres create a relaxed aesthetic. Chunky jute rugs are particularly popular for boho stylings.

For a cleaner look, bleached jute provides an airiness that elevates your space while maintaining a laid-back vibe. Round jute rugs are perfect for styling underneath coffee tables in living areas, while large jute rugs are incredible for placing underneath dining tables or under lounges. We also recommend small jute rugs to highlight furniture like side tables and sideboards.

Placement: Placing a jute rug in your home

With our selection of warm colours, patterns and shapes, our range of jute rugs is an excellent choice for livening up your living areas. However, we’ve put together some tips to remember when styling a jute rug in your home.

  • Coffee tables and dining tables — When adding a rug underneath a coffee or dining table, ensure all four legs fit on your jute rug. We also recommend leaving enough space between the edge of the table and the edge of the rug for you to walk around the table's circumference. This prevents your rug from looking too small for the table and helps to stop the rug from getting caught under chairs.
  • Patterned rugs — If you opt for a patterned jute rug, consider whether any surrounding furniture will cover the rug’s design. For example, traditional rugs often feature a border design around the outside. If you place this style of rug in a bedroom, the edges of your bed may cover part of the pattern. This can create an off-kilter look to your home decor.
  • Under-bed rugs — When placing a jute rug under your bed, ensure an equal amount of rug on either side of the bed. This creates a symmetrical look for your room.
  • Rug shapes — If you’re placing a rug underneath your furniture, we recommend matching the shape of your rug to the shape of the furniture on top of it. For example, add a round jute rug underneath a round coffee table for a harmonious look. However, don’t be afraid to mix it up depending on your style. The mid-century modern style plays with adding contrasting shapes to the same room, such as placing a round rug in front of a rectangular couch. This can liven up your living area and add refreshing character to the room.
  • Carpet runners — When styling a jute carpet runner in your hallway, try to allow at least 10cm of space between the edges of the rug and the surrounding walls. This stops your rug from looking too big for the hallway.

Themes: Jute rugs for every home decor theme

Jute rugs come in a variety of shapes and colours, making them adaptable to your home's aesthetic. If you have a particular style in mind, read on for our guide on how a jute rug can enhance your home decor theme.

Traditional

When choosing a rug to match your traditional home, our range of jute rugs includes elegant, sophisticated colours that add a touch of warmth to any room.

Traditional decor aims to create a timeless, classic space that feels comfortable and inviting. While many people associate traditional-style rugs with regal European and Oriental patterns, a simple jute rug can add the right finishing touch to your traditional theme.

Our Jolly Eco-Friendly Jute Rug has a silky appearance similar to classic textures like wool. Its clean edges and neutral colour scheme make it ideal for balancing a traditionally styled space with busier, more vibrant colours and patterns.

Available in three convenient sizes, our Jimmy Bleach Flatweave Rug would be similarly suited to this type of living room or entertaining area.

Mid-Century Modern

One of the defining characteristics of mid-century modern style is its incorporation of contrasting shapes to create a lively, refreshing atmosphere. That makes our range of round and rectangular jute rugs an unconventional but effective choice for your mid-century modern aesthetic.

Our circular jute rugs, such as our Harmony Natural Jute Rug, would create an eye-catching contrast when paired with rectangular furniture such as lounges, entertainment units and sideboards. If you have a large living space, pair a monochrome round jute rug with a rectangular rug featuring a busy, abstract pattern, such as our Mallorca Hand Woven Jute Rug.

Eclectic

Much like mid-century modern styling, eclectic decor is all about taking risks to create a space that feels chaotic and cohesive at the same time.

A good way to start building an eclectic space is to pair two rugs with contrasting patterns and see how it feels. Our recommendation would be to try seeing if the dark grey of our Harmony Natural Jute Rug brings out the red and black highlights on our Massimo Hand-Woven Border Rug.

With eclectic styling, there are no rules, but there’s often some trial and error. Our site includes an accurate range of useful images for each product to help you make the best-informed decision about your purchase. If you’re unsure about how to build the eclectic living room of your dreams, browse the photos on our product pages and see what jumps out at you.

Boho

When adding a rug to your bohemian space, avoid monochromatic colours or sharp shapes. The hard edges of a geometric pattern create a rigid, controlled feeling that clashes with the loose, charming feeling of boho styling.

Our Polly Round Braided Rug is a popular choice for the bohemian theme. Its integration of vibrant colours within a loosely structured pattern is ideal for building character within a space, without overwhelming the laid-back flow of the room.

Hamptons

Hamptons decor is where your jute rug will shine. Jute rugs are a surefire way to bring a breezy beach atmosphere to your living room, bedroom or entertainment area. The visible texture creates a rustic, laid-back feeling in any space. Their integration of neutral tans and beiges with natural jute fibres is perfect for evoking the Hamptons style.

Hamptons-style rugs typically use light blues and often serve as a splash of colour against clean white walls. Our Ravine Denim & Jute Braid Rug is an excellent choice for this decor, as the calm light blues are interwoven with natural straw-coloured beige.

The bleached colour of our Oscar Handwoven Jute Rug creates a sandy look that would be especially effective when paired with dark grey or brown floorboards. For a bolder colour, try our Harrold Hand Woven Jute Rug. The natural tan border contrasts beautifully with its deep ocean blue.

When creating your dream Hamptons style, our range of jute rugs in Australia provides the best options at an affordable price.

Jute carpet and rug FAQs

How do you clean a jute rug?

We recommend shaking your rug outside to dislodge most of the dirt and hair for general maintenance. It’s essential to vacuum your jute rug twice weekly to remove excess dust, debris and shedding.

As jute rugs are made from 100% natural fibres, they can often shed small dust-like fibres easily picked up by a vacuum or swept up by a broom. However, high-quality jute rugs are woven tightly to prevent excessive shedding.

For everyday spills, we recommend dabbing the spill with a dry towel to soak it up and protect the rug from further damage. Avoid rubbing your jute rug as this can work the stain further into the fibres. Start by dabbing from the outside of the stain and work your way inwards.

If the spill is large or dabbing is ineffective, try soaking up the liquid with a small amount of bicarb soda. This method soaks up the liquid and balances the acid in the spill, which helps prevent discolouration.

However, the golden rule when cleaning your jute rug is to avoid getting it wet. Moisture can release oils in the rug’s natural fibres, darkening the rug. We recommend using dry cleaning methods when removing spills from your jute rugs.

Are jute rugs hypoallergenic?

Yes! With regular vacuuming and general upkeep, jute rugs are great for allergy sufferers. While most rugs will absorb allergens to some extent, jute carpet rugs will actively repel dust mites thanks to their natural fibres. Jute rugs are also typically made with a thinner weave than synthetic fibres, which traps fewer allergens in their pile. The strong, tight fibres used in high-quality jute rugs reduce the number of excess rug fibres released into your house.

With its natural, non-toxic construction, a jute rug is a good choice for minimising the spread of allergens and improving the overall air quality of your home.

Do jute rugs shed?

This depends on the quality of your jute rug. One of the main selling points of jute rugs is the hypoallergenic plant fibres, making them ideal for reducing the spread of allergens in your home. However, jute rugs have been known to shed depending on their construction and age. Higher-quality jute rugs with tighter braiding typically shed less than other jute rugs, though shedding can still occur.

Because they are made with braided plant fibres, jute rugs can become brittle over time. Light shedding can be easily avoided with regular vacuuming. Alternatively, shake your jute rug outdoors to release any loose dust from the rug. This will reduce shedding in your home.

At Rug.com.au, we offer our customers the highest-quality jute rugs at an affordable price. We pride ourselves on providing the best service for our customers and are always eager to help you make the right purchase for your home. If you have an enquiry about a specific rug, reach out to us online or call us at 1800-784-368.

Are jute rugs environmentally friendly?

Yes, jute rugs are very environmentally friendly. Jute is a 100% natural vegetable fibre grown in humid, tropical locations in India, Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh. Around 90% of the world’s jute fibres are grown in Bangladesh and are used to weave rugs, ropes and other valuable, long lasting materials.

Jute plants don’t require poisonous chemicals like fertilisers or pesticides to grow, making them one of the most environmentally friendly crops to produce. They’re a great option to avoid bringing chemicals or toxins into your home. 100% natural, fully biodegradable and recyclable, jute rugs are one of the most eco-conscious rugs available.

Are jute rugs too casual for my space?

This depends entirely on your choice of decor and the feeling you want to create in a room. A jute rug is often associated with the laid-back feeling of Hamptons decor or the chic, characterful bohemian aesthetic.

If you’re looking for a rug to add a sophisticated touch to a room, jute rugs are probably not the best option. Professional spaces like offices lean towards contemporary geometric rugs, as their use of clean, symmetrical shapes creates a sleek, sharp impression.

Our range of jute rugs includes dyed colours such as dark greys and blacks, which are suitable if you’re interested in a monochromatic aesthetic for your space. However, one of the main selling points of jute rugs is their visual texture. Their woven appearance creates a busy, loose feeling that often clashes with professional spaces' cool, contemporary feel.

We recommend browsing our range of geometric and contemporary rugs if you want to create a professional feeling in your space.

Can jute rugs be used outside?

Depending on your needs, jute rugs are great for indoor and outdoor use.

It’s best to place a jute rug on porches and patios for outdoor use, as its natural look and feel complement the outdoor setting. This also prevents excess moisture and humidity from affecting your rug, as liquids can discolour jute rugs by darkening the fibres. Make sure your jute rugs are kept in covered outdoor areas like verandahs, porches, and decks that offer protection from the rain.

If you’re looking for the natural, organic feel of jute with added durability for outdoor settings, we recommend opting for a sisal rug. Sisal is a much coarser and more durable fibre with a similar look to jute but extra toughness.

What’s the difference between sisal and jute?

Sisal and jute are 100% natural fibres, derived from plants in different parts of the world. Jute is mainly produced in Bangladesh from tall, leafy plants reminiscent of bamboo.

Meanwhile, sisal is a stiff, tough fibre derived from the agave plant, the same plant that produces tequila. Traditionally found in Southern Mexico, most sisal is farmed in Africa and processed in Belgium.

There’s no significant difference between sisal and jute based on appearance alone. Both can be dyed easily and come in a range of sizes. The main difference between the two is how they feel underfoot. Sisal is coarser, making it better suited to outdoor use. Jute is typically softer and better suited for living areas and bedrooms.

Are jute rugs pet-friendly?

If you’re a pet owner, your first thought when buying a new rug is probably how your dog or cat will react to it. Fortunately, jute rugs are an excellent option for all kinds of pets.

Everyone’s pet is different. If your cat likes to scratch your current rug, they’ll likely also enjoy scratching a jute rug. However, there is no evidence suggesting that jute rugs are more popular as scratching posts for cats and dogs than other types of rugs.

Jute rugs are made with dirt-absorbing fibres. While they will pick up the dirt and dust tracked in by your pets, the benefit of jute rugs is that they will work their way through the fibres, rather than sitting on the surface. Simply lift your rug and sweep underneath it to quickly and conveniently dispose of pet hairs or dirt.

This makes jute rugs a great option for transitional spaces in your home, such as exits and entrances. Place one outside sliding doors or on your undercover verandah to catch any excess dirt before it gets indoors.

However, it’s best to avoid getting your jute rug wet. This means that if you have a pet prone to accidents, a jute rug may not be your best choice. We recommend blotting the affected area if your pet accidentally soils your jute rug. Try a dry carpet cleaning solution if you still can’t shift the stain.

Are jute rugs soft?

Yes! Jute is naturally soft without sacrificing strength and durability. Jute rugs are comfortable to walk on barefoot, providing a comforting texture thanks to their firm fibres and chunky weaves.

Jute is sometimes blended with materials like chenille to create a softer feel. Regardless of their blend, jute rugs are soft enough for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. They’re also perfect for bare-foot households.

However, if you require a rug with extra softness for children, our kids' range is a better fit. Our kids' rugs are made with machine-washable synthetic materials, making it easy to clean them should any spills occur. We’ve tailored our kids' range to provide maximum softness for your kids, including fun, educational patterns to keep them entertained for hours.

How do I choose the right size jute rug for my space?

Jute rugs come in various shapes and sizes, so it's important to choose one that fits your space and purpose. We’ve compiled a breakdown of our entire range of rug sizes to help you find the best fit for your room.

  • Small rugs — Our small rugs measure 150 x 80cm and 170 x 120cm and are best suited for small living areas. They’re also great for livening up transitional areas like entrances and exits in your home or highlighting small pieces of furniture within a large room.
  • Medium rugs — Measuring at 230 x 160 cm, medium rugs are perfect for living rooms and can be placed under desks in home offices. They can also be added underneath small beds, such as children’s bedrooms.
  • Large rugs — At 290 x 200 cm, large rugs are best for filling spacious living rooms, master bedrooms, and dining rooms. Large jute rugs are especially great for placing under 6-8-seater dining settings.
  • Extra-large rugs — Extra-large jute rugs will add warmth and texture to your space for large open plan rooms and extra spacious homes. They’re also recommended for larger dining tables that can seat 8-10 people at 330 x 240 cm.

However, ensure an extra-large rug isn’t too big for your space. Pairing two medium-sized rugs can be a better solution for covering a large surface area, especially in segmented entertaining rooms. Pairing rugs of multiple sizes into one large space can help divide up a room and make your space appear larger.

Do I need an anti-slip pad for my jute rug?

Placing a heavy object on a rug doesn’t mean you can’t slip or trip on it. We recommend that all customers add a rug pad to their purchase. While jute rugs aren’t more slippery than other textiles like synthetic or cowhide rugs, any rug is susceptible to moving and slipping, depending on the surface underneath it.

An anti-slip pad will reduce the risk of accidents in areas with high foot traffic. This is especially important for homes with small children likelier to slip and fall. Our slip pads will also save you time having to readjust your rug if it moves position.

At Rug.com.au, we make it simple to include an anti-slip pad with your rug. Find the Select Pad option on any of our product pages, choose the pad size you need, and add the rug to your cart as usual.

Will my jute rug look identical to the photos on your website?

We always try to ensure the images on our website are as accurate as possible to the product you’ll receive. However, several factors mean your rug may look slightly different to our pictures.

When you unroll your new rug, the natural and electric light in your room can affect its appearance. For example, rooms with more natural light will pick up the lighter hues of your rug. While this won’t radically change your rug’s appearance, it’s worth keeping your room's lighting in mind when selecting a rug colour.

The settings on your computer monitor can also affect how our photos appear. Every computer monitor has different settings for brightness and contrast that can slightly change how any photo will appear. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable, but the effect on your purchased rug should be minimal.
