Jute Rugs

Small and large jute rugs made from natural, environmentally friendly materials

Looking to add a casual, laid back atmosphere to your home? Our handmade natural jute rugs can make any home look effortlessly chic, with a twist of environmental friendliness. Always on-trend, jute rugs have a silky appearance and soft underfoot feel, making them the ideal choice for bedrooms and super snug living room areas.

Jute is a natural plant-derived fibre whose strength and versatility have been valued by artisans for hundreds of years. Mainly produced in Bangladesh, jute thrives in humid, wet environments and requires little to no fertiliser and is naturally highly pest resistant, making it sustainable to produce. Natural jute rugs are recyclable and 100% biodegradable, meaning you can enjoy your rug for decades without worrying about what will become of it at the end of its life.

Jute has been used to make textiles for thousands of years, with evidence of jute being used in the Indus valley civilization as early as five thousand years ago. Today jute is one of the most popular materials in the world, second only to cotton over which it has several advantages including needing much less fertiliser and pesticides along with being rain-fed,
making it cost-effective and environmentally friendly to produce.

Our versatile, eco-friendly jute rugs come in a range of styles from neutral shades to bold tones and a wide range of shapes and sizes. Whether a round jute rug in a bedroom, a black jute rug to complete a minimalist look, a white jute rug to set off a beachy aesthetic or a large jute rug in a living room, a jute rug is a perfect choice for any space. Our range of jute rugs provides the added bonus of being highly durable – great for high-traffic spaces, like stairs and landings. Our jute carpets and rugs are perfect for all home decor styles.

FAQs

How do you clean a jute rug?

For spills, we recommend two methods: dabbing or bicarbonate of soda. As is the case with most rugs, dabbing the spill with a dry towel is the best way to soak up the spill and protect the rug. Avoid rubbing your jute rug as this can work the stain further into the fibres. Start dabbing from the outside of the stain and work your way inwards. If the spill is particularly large or if dabbing is ineffective try soaking up the liquid with some bicarb soda. This method not only soaks up the liquid but balances the acid in the spilled liquid, helping prevent discolouration.

For general maintenance, you should shake out your rug outside and vacuum it regularly to remove excess dust, debris and shedding. As jute rugs are made from 100% natural fibres they are known to shed small dust-like fibres which are easily picked up by a vacuum or swept up by a broom.

It’s important not to get your jute rug wet when cleaning it as this can release oils in the natural jute fibres which darken the rug. If a stain can’t be removed with the dry methods above use a small amount of dishwashing liquid on a clean, damp cloth and make gentle dabbing motions.

Are jute rugs hypoallergenic?

Yes. While most rugs will absorb allergens to some extent, jute carpet rugs will actively repel dust mites. Jute rugs are also typically a thinner weave than synthetic fibres, meaning they trap fewer allergens in their pile. With regular vacuuming jute rugs are great options for allergy sufferers, with natural, non-toxic fibres which keep dust mites away and help to minimise allergens in your home.

Are jute rugs good for dining rooms?

Yes! Jute rugs are a great option for dining rooms. Their neutral tone and hardy nature make them perfect for high traffic areas. Dyed jute rugs can also be used to tie together the colour scheme of a dining space, with modern neutrals like navy, taupe and charcoal popular options.

When choosing a jute rug for your dining room opt for a large jute rug that extends well beyond your table so that when chairs are pulled out they are still comfortably on the rug, rather than half on and half off.

Can jute rugs be used outside?

Jute rugs are suited to being used on porches and patios as their natural look and feel complement an outdoor aesthetic. It is important to note that moisture and humidity can discolour jute rugs as jute releases natural oils when wet, darkening the fibres. So outdoor jute rugs should ideally be kept in covered outdoor areas like verandahs, porches and decks that offer rain protection.

If you’re looking for the natural, organic feel of jute with added durability and suitability for outdoor use consider opting for a Sisal Rug. Sisal is a much coarser and more durable fibre which gives a similar look to jute but with enhanced toughness.

Are jute rugs environmentally friendly?

Jute is a 100% natural vegetable fibre grown in humid, tropical locations in countries like India, Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh. Around 90% of the world’s jute fibres are grown in Bangladesh, where this sturdy and versatile material has been used to weave rugs, ropes and other useful materials for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years.

Jute doesn’t need much fertiliser and is highly resistant to pests, making it one of the most environmentally friendly crops to produce. 100% natural, fully biodegradable and recyclable, not to mention durable and versatile, jute rugs are one of the most eco-conscious choices you can make for your home.

What’s the difference between sisal and jute?

Sisal and jute are both 100% natural fibres, derived from plants from different parts of the world. Jute is mainly produced in Bangladesh from tall, leafy plants reminiscent of bamboo. Meanwhile, sisal is a stiff, tough fibre derived from the agave plant, traditionally found in southern Mexico (the same plant which produces tequila). Nowadays most sisal is farmed in Africa and processed in Belgium.

Based on appearance there is little difference between sisal and jute. Both can be dyed easily and come in a range of sizes. The main difference between the two is the texture and feel of the rug underfoot. Sisal is more coarse and hardy, making it better suited to outdoor use and high traffic areas like entranceways. Meanwhile, jute is typically softer and better suited to living areas and bedrooms.

Can jute rugs get wet?

No. Wherever possible it’s best to avoid your jute rug getting wet. When exposed to water natural jute fibres can release naturally occurring oils which can discolour and darken the rug. For this reason, we recommend using dry cleaning methods on your jute carpet like spot cleaning, vacuuming and bicarb soda instead of traditional carpet cleaning techniques like steam cleaning or shampooing.

How do you style a jute rug?

Jute rugs are incredibly versatile thanks to their natural, neutral tone and ability to be dyed in a range of colours. Jute rugs are particularly popular for those cultivating a boho or beachy themed home as the natural fibres enhance the relaxed aesthetic of both these styles. Chunky jute rugs are particularly favoured for boho stylings.

For a cleaner look, bleached jute can elevate a space and provide an airiness while still adding a laid back vibe to the space. Round jute rugs are perfect for styling underneath coffee tables or as a central piece of floor art in a living area. Large jute rugs are great for placing underneath dining tables or in entertaining areas under lounges and sideboards.

With our wide range of jute rugs available in different colours, patterns and shapes there are almost no limits to the ways you can style a jute rug.

Are jute rugs pet friendly?

Jute rugs are a great option for all kinds of pets. Thanks to their dirt absorbing fibres, pets can track dust and dirt onto your jute rug and it will work its way through the fibres where it can be swept up from underneath the rug, along with pet hairs and shed jute fibres. Jute is also 100% natural, meaning your cat or dog can curl up on it without you needing to stress about nasty chemicals. Jute rugs are also great options for transitional rugs from inside to outside. Place one outside sliding doors or on undercover verandahs to provide a surface for excess dirt from your yard to be discarded before your pet enters the house.

Are jute rugs soft?

Yes. Jute is naturally soft but still strong and durable. Jute is sometimes blended with other materials like chenille to make a softer feel. Jute rugs are comfortable to walk on with bare feet, providing a comforting texture thanks to their firm fibres and chunky weaves.

Jute rugs are soft enough for living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas, however, if you want to create a space for young children to play or add warmth to your little one’s bedroom one of our kids rugs will probably better suit your purpose. Our range of kids rugs are made of machine-washable synthetic materials that make for easy cleaning and provide softness and comfort for your kids and for you.

How do I choose the right size jute rug for my space?

Jute rugs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so it’s important to choose one that fits your space and your purpose. You should consider the following factors when choosing a jute rug for your home:

  • When styling a rug under a table ensure all four legs of the table fit on the jute rug with enough space to walk around the table on the rug
  • If opting for a patterned jute rug take into account any furniture that may cover the rug’s design
  • For large jute rugs being styled under dining tables ensure the chairs can be pulled out and still remain on the rug
  • For under bed jute rugs ensure there is a border of space between the rug and the bedroom walls
  • Consider accentuating your furniture by matching its shape with the jute rug styled underneath it. For example style a round jute rug underneath a round coffee table
  • Jute carpet runners should allow at least a 10cm space between the edges of the rug and the walls when styled in a hallway
Small 150 x 80 — 170 x 120 cm Small rugs are best suited to highlighting small pieces of furniture like side tables. Great for small living areas, bedrooms and entrance areas.
Medium 230 x 160 cm Perfect for living rooms, under desks and coffee tables in bedrooms and home offices.
Large 290 x 200 cm  Large rugs are best for filling bigger rooms like spacious living rooms, master bedrooms and dining rooms. Large jute rugs are great for placing under 6-8 seater dining settings.
Extra large 330 x 240 cm For large open plan rooms and extra spacious homes, these rugs will fill the space and add warmth and texture to the area. Suitable for 8-10 seater dining settings and large entertaining areas.
